Come hear Maine “Apple Whisperer” John Bunker at Old Town House!
John Bunker is a self-taught apple expert who has done pioneering work in locating, identifying and preserving heritage apple tree varieties. John explores the fields, farms, woods and towns of Maine seeking living, centuries-old, forgotten and abandoned apple trees.
He is the driving force behind the Maine Heritage Orchard in Unity, where 360+ varieties of old, rare apple and pear varieties are grown. The collection includes varieties from all 16 Maine counties, dating back as far as 1630.
John will talk about the history of apple growing in Maine, and his work in preserving and propagating apple varieties. He lives in Palermo and operates Out On a Limb Apples, a homestead farm and experimental orchard.
He’s the author of Apples and the Art of Detection: Tracking Down, Identifying, and Preserving Rare Apples.
Always wondered about that old apple tree in your yard? Bring an apple for John to ID!
AND an October treat: We’ll start off the evening with homemade apple pie and ice cream. A great way to celebrate the bounty of fall!
